When using Outlook and trying to reply to a an email, you may get this error message:
Mail delivery failed. Message has lines too long for transport
This is caused by a fault in Outlook which tries to send your entire email as a single line. Mail servers won't allow this if it is too long.
The maximum length set in Exim on all of our servers is 204800 which is 100 times longer than the default of 2048.
This issue only occurs with Outlook. Other mail clients do not have this problem.
A quick search in Google of the error message will show this issue is quite common.
Here are some possible ways around this bug:
- In Outlook->Options->Mail try setting the Automatically wrap text at character value to 65:
Close and re-open Outlook and try sending your email again. - Most people get around the problem by creating a new blank email and then copy and pasting the content into it. This appears to fix the line length and will allow the email to be sent.
- Try converting the email to plain text and send again:
- Use a different mail client. Thunderbird works on all devices and is free.
- Use webmail to send your email; type webmail.yourdomainname.com.au into your browser address bar.
