How to change your WordPress URL or domain

WordPress expects to run on the domain name it was set up on. You can add new domains to your hosting and redirect them to your website, but WordPress will redirect back to its installed domain.

You will need to reconfigure WordPress to use your new domain instead of your old one.

Follow these steps:

  • Ensure your new domain has been added to your hosting account.
  • You should be able to open your new domain in your browser and see your website.  It may not load correctly but this is normal at this stage
  • Now log into WordPress as an admin and click on the Settings menu and select General

  • You should see your old URL listed twice:
  • Type your new domain into both text boxes. Be careful that you include the https:// as this is important.
  • Scroll down and click the Save Changes button
